Size really DOES matter…..well at least length does!

Length of our Telemeres that is…..Telomeres are the end caps of chromosomes that affect how quickly cells age. They are combinations of DNA and protein that protect the ends of chromosomes and help them remain stable. As they become shorter, and as their structural integrity weakens, the cells age and die quicker. In recent studies, shorter telomeres have become associated with aging-related diseases, including many forms of cancer, stroke, vascular dementia, cardiovascular disease, obesity, osteoporosis and diabetes.

The scientists at UC San Francisco and the Preventative Medicine, Research Institute conducted a study to investigate the effect of diet and lifestyle choices on health and made some starting discoveries about these choices and telemere length.

The 5 year study of 35 men diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer found that lifestyle changes led to a “significant” increase in telomere length of approximately 10 percent. In addition, the more people continued with these lifestyle changes, the more dramatic their improvements in telomere length.  Here are the changes they made:

  1. a plant-based diet (high in fruits, vegetables and unrefined grains, and low in fat and refined carbohydrates; more chicken, fish and pulses as a source of protein)
  2. moderate exercise (walking 30 minutes a day, six days a week, at a brisk pace)
  3. stress reduction (gentle yoga-based stretching, breathing, meditation)
  4. social connection (participation in group support meetings to talk about their concerns, stressors, issues)

These lifestyle choices are all covered in “Stressed To Kill”, a comprehensive workshop to help people make the rest of their life, the best of their life.  Stack the deck in your favor and turn back the hands of time!  Longer IS better!
