Words of Wisdom from Granny………

I went to the gym today, as I do 3-4 days a week but I didn’t go with my usual enthusiasm and joie de vivre.  The truth is, I was feeling a bit sorry for myself (yup, I get PMS too-Poor Me Syndrome).  I was feeling frustrated that it is taking FOREVER to drop the weight I put on as a result of an injury I sustained last January.  Silly isn’t it when you consider the disabilities and challenges that some people deal with?  Anyway, a lovely elderly lady approached me as I was working out and joked “I sure wouldn’t tangle with you, even if I was a man!  You’re strong!”  We laughed and passed a most lovely quarter of an hour talking about life, love and what’s really important in life.  Here’s what I re-learned about life from the 89 year old angel who I think, came to inspire an attitude adjustment:

1. Live in the moment- don’t dwell on the past or compare yourself to your former self.  Celebrate life right now, today, what you have, who and what you are, where you are. It could all be different……

2. It’s better to be loving than to be rightthis is hard sometimes!  It’s not about giving in, it’s about giving up the need to be in control or to appear smarter that someone else.  Life will be more peaceful if you do this.

3. Be a spectator to your own thoughts, especially when you become emotional– put yourself in someone else’s shoes, see yourself through someone else’s eyes.  Granny told me that she wanted to be the kind of daughter-in-law that she hoped to have someday.  So wise!

4. Be grateful for at least one thing every day- Granny was walking the track at the gym with her wheeled walker.  She told me she was “blessed” that she could still do this.  Yes you are and we are too…..I am a grateful person, but I forgot to be grateful this morning.

 5. Treat others the way you want to be treated- another hard one.  Sometimes we’d rather treat people the way they DESERVE to be treated, in OUR opinion.  Don’t do it…..Karma’s a witch!

 6. Help others every chance you get– Here is my chance to pay it forward; I am sharing this so you will see your life as Granny reminded me to see mine, it is what you make it.  Life has a way of “showing” us what we need to change or learn.  Thank goodness my “lesson” came in the form of a sweet elderly Granny who gently delivered it.  Better that than the kind of “wake up call” we all dread. Make it a great day!
